This medium desk journal is hardbound in genuine plum-coloured leather, sourced as a by-product of the meat industry. Beautifully tight-grained, this vegetable-tanned buffalo is mop-polished after tanning & dying. This allows for a beautiful lustre that enhances and protects the leather without sacrificing its attractive natural qualities.
The cover is finished with an elegantly recessed, hand-drawn illustration in silver-coloured foil, which depicts a twining stem of Morning Glory (ipomoea caerulea) with two flowers in bloom.
At the head and tail of the spine, hand-sewn silk endbands add beauty and strength to the binding and are carefully colour-matched in complementary shades of red and gold.
The book’s structure is based on a binding style that was originally patented in 1799, and was a popular choice for stationery bindings in Britain and Germany until the middle of the 20th Century. These robust books were designed to cope well with high usage, and to open flat for best use at a table. Overall, they are an excellent choice for Desk Journals, guest books, and ledgers.
Inside, you’ll find hand-printed Italian endpages in a traditional Florentine design; a satin ribbon bookmark in a complementary burgundy red; and approximately 300 leaves (600 sides) of the Bindery’s 85gsm Journal Paper. This is a smooth, natural white paper that accepts fountain pen inks and and an impressive variety of other media. It’s also highly resistant to ageing (archival) and boasts an excellent environmental profile.
