Leigh’s Sketchbook

An early piece in the development of my bookbinding skills; this custom sketchbook was made for an artist, using her favourite paper.

Loosely based on one of the fantastic designs over at Becca Making Faces, Leigh’s custom sketchbook was my first departure from the more traditional Japanese Stab Binding.

The book is 50 sheets of acid-free, heavyweight (220gsm) cartridge paper; and is bound in a landscape A4 format. The hardback cover is finished with limited-edition V&A fabric in off-white, with a coral pattern in greens and reds.  Between the spine and the hinges, the fabric is a plain cotton in a complimentary green.  This acts as a contrasting background for the binding itself, which is a stylised floral stab-bound design in white linen yarn.  The endsheets are handmade mulberry paper, with embedded tamarind leaf, in a pale shade of green.
